Listen to Sense

Listen to sense

The ‘Listen to Sense’ campaign is a response to the increasing number of Army personnel who are suffering hearing loss. The purpose of this Army Health Promotion campaign is to increase awareness and ensure a greater understanding of the problem by soldiers and their commanders. The Army culture does not currently attach enough importance to hearing protection and too many soldiers still consider it macho to avoid wearing it, which shows a worrying level of ignorance about the potential impact on the quality of their lives and the significant damage that may be caused to their careers.

It is crucial that soldiers have situational awareness and can communicate effectively. Good hearing improves our ability to survive and personnel who hide the symptoms can easily put themselves at risk, jeopardise a mission and threaten the lives of their colleagues.

The campaign is centred around a health education DVD, clips of which are included
on this site combined with Instructor Notes to help trainers facilitate a better understanding of the problem amongst military personnel.

Other media is also available, including both a Commander’s Guide and an Individual Guide to Hearing Protection, which can be downloaded from this site. There are also posters available here and adverts have been placed in various military journals. Garrison Radio has also recorded a number of interviews on the subject.
