The Museum's archival collection was formed in 1967 with its material that dates back to before the formation of 'C' Telegraph Troop, Royal Engineers, in 1870.
The Museum is an excellent place to find out about the general history of the Royal Corps of Signals and its antecedents of the Royal Engineers.
However, THE MUSEUM DOES NOT KEEP RECORDS OF SERVICE OF ITS SOLDIERS AND OFFICERS.
It is therefore unlikely that we can assist in research concerning the personal records of individuals. If you require this kind of information please see below.
In the Museum we have a comprehensive Archive and Library specifically about Royal Signals and the history of Army signalling.
In addition to the documentary collection, the Museum has a large number of photographs. The photographic collection contains historic photographs taken by members and ex-members of the Corps which portray all aspects of the life of the Corps and its antecedents from the Crimean War until today, together with photographs from units which show them at work and at play. The photographic archive also has images of the major items of signalling equipment used by the British Army since early days. many of out photographs are digitised
There is a collection of historic training films and videos of the Corps and a collection of personal oral history recordings.
This material is available to the public, subject to normal Public Record restrictions. The Greenwood Room is set aside for reading and prior appointments should be made. Availability is Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm all year except for Bank Holidays and the two weeks encompassing Christmas and the New Year. A small charge of £6.00 is made for use of the archive which includes access to the Museum.
It is regretted that the Museum cannot accept research enquiries by telephone. All research enquiries should be submitted in writing giving full contact details including telephone number and e-mail where relevant. PLEASE NOTE THAT A CHARGE WILL BE MADE FOR THIS SERVICE.

Public Access to the Archive.
The Archive material is available to the public, subject to normal Public Record restrictions. The Greenwood Room is set aside for reading and prior appointments should be made through the Archivist. LIBRARY
The Museum library contains approximately 2,000 volumes. There are books covering the main aspects of military history since the Napoleonic War as well as more specialised works on the history of military communications. Other volumes deal with the scientific and technical aspects of communicating or look in detail at specific equipment. The collection also boasts copies of all the published autobiographies of members of the Corps and the published histories of individual Royal Signals units.
The library holds, in addition to its books, a large collection of magazines produced by Royal Signals units and Commonwealth Signals units, by military societies and by civilian groups with an interest in military communications.
